Undergraduate Student projects.
It is gratifying to
note that students can contribute meaningfully towards the development
of Information Technology Resources for the people of India. This web site
bears testimony to this achievement. The Acharya effort is only a beginning
in the process of bringing literacy to the people through the use of computers
in their mother tongue.
There are countless
applications one can think of that merit development in individual languages,
to suit the requirements of the regions and there can be no better choice
for developers than the students of this country. We encourage you to look
at the tools provided at this site and use them to develop new applications
yourself. Often these will be short projects which one can complete over
the summer or a larger project involving two or more students over a semester.
The Acharya effort
is now an Open Source project and students can learn more about Open Source
Development. This will benefit many in the long run, as we will be in a
position to develop our own resources, with the added advantage that we
will also understand what is being done. From the point of view of a student,
such an experience will be extremely meaningful, in gaining the confidence
that we can also develop technology. The project is hosted at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/imli/
Towards this, students
are encouraged to look at the documentation available at the project web
site and work on short projects. Specifically,
-
The basic principles of the
Local language Library and how one can develop applications.
-
Sample programs which use the
library.
-
Take up short exercises in localizing
simple applications in a regional language.
-
Examine larger problems that
would merit specific development in the area of Data Bases or Linguistic
Processing.
Examples
of projects that could be taken up are described in brief, in the linked
page.
