Scripts Handled by the IITM
Software
The scripts
indicated in the table below are supported in the IITM Software. The Multilingual
Editor may be used with any of these scripts. The names of these scripts
have been fixed for use in the Editor and these names are also given in
the table.
It may be kept in
mind that the software applications based on the IITM scheme of representing
text, allow proper linguistic processing in all these scripts (languges
associated with the scripts).
The Multilingual Editor
provides automatic transliteration across all these. The IPA script is
based on the Roman Diacritics scheme standardized by the National Library,
Kolkota. It is actually a subset of the characters specified in the International
Phonetic Alphabet. All these scripts conform to one sorting order, compatible
with Sanskrit and the South Indian Languages. The Speaking version of the
Multilingual Editor also supports all these scripts.
The
link associated with each script will take you to a page displaying the
basic aksharas and the matras used in the script. The linked page may also
include additional details on the rules followed for writing the conjuncts
in each script.

The following
Languages are included in the version of the Editor which supports Right
to Left scripts. Presently, only data entry and printing is handled. Other
applications may be included later.
Urdu, Arabic,
Avestan, Hebrew
The above may not
be directly transliterated into Indian scripts. The sorting order for these
scripts is also different from the order for Indian scripts. Available
Roman Transliterations for these scripts are arbitrary and so the Editor
for Urdu, Arabic and Hebrew may not display Roman Transliteration according
to any known scheme.
The Sinhala
script (followed in Sri Lanka) is also fully supported by the IITM Software.
This script was used for writing Pali Texts as well as native Sinhala.
The speaking version of the Multilingual Editor also supports Sinhala.
The IITM editor permits
data entry for Japanese Kana (Hiragana)
as this conforms to a syllabic writing system.
Other scripts which
have been tried with success are, Classical
Greek, Oromo of Ethiopia and Tulisan Bali. These
were tried in the earlier version of the Multilingual Editor. The present
version can also handle these but it will be some time before the support
files are generated.
The Multilingual Editor
may be used with the following languages which use a syllabic writing system.
Thai,
Vietnamese, Burmese, Tibetan, Malay. We have not however provided the
required language support files. Generating the support files can be a
small project for students in the respective countries.

Akshara Animation
Each link below relates to
a page in which the stroking order for the vowels, consonants and the matras
for the script are displayed using animation. The animation is through
a Java applet and Java support is required in your browser.
The applet seems to work
properly on Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 4.8 and above, Mozilla, Opera,
Firefox on Windows and Linux platforms.
