Software Download
Welcome to the
software Download page. The software here refers to the applications developed
at IIT Madras as part of the Multilingual User Interface Design project.
The applications available for free download are grouped into different
categories, based on the use and area of application. For most of the applications,
there is a brief description of the program and a link to the page where
the application is described.
For most applications,
the accompanying Readme file will provide basic information about the package
and instructions for downloading and installing the package. Source code
is provided for many utilities so that one might enhance the utility to
suit specific requirements.
Almost all the
applications given here have been developed at the Systems Development
Laboratory, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Madras
to help the poor and underprivileged persons in India learn the use of
computers and interact with a system in their own mother tongue. While
IIT Madras cannot claim to have done anything to match the capabilities
and features of commercial applications, the software is unique in providing
the best possible approach to computing with Indian languages. You may
also look at the on-line demos presented at
this site to convince yourself that the IITM Software is indeed different
in its approach to providing effective user interfaces in Indian languages.
The copyright for all the
multilingual applications available for download from these pages is held
by IIT Madras.
During 2005, the IITM
Software development effort has become an Open
Source project at Sourceforge with licensing under GPL. Please consider
contributing to this effort.
